Thatchmore Farm is a ten acre family farm in Leicester, North Carolina founded in 1987. Since then we have grown certified organic produce as well as ornamentals, mushrooms, and Christmas trees. Karen, Liz and Tom operate the farm with the help of a small crew of farm apprentices. We grow about thirty varieties of fruits and vegetables but are known for early season tomatoes, lettuce and greens. Recently, we have been diversifying into more exotic fruit like goumi berry. We have a variety of forest products including organic Christmas trees, wreaths, firewood, wood products, mushrooms, ramps, and basket willows.

We sell at the North Asheville and West Asheville tailgate markets as well as through a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).

Our work schedule…

Our crew works year-round except for about a month off from December to January. Workers arrive and leave through the year. Most workers see the benefit of seeing our operation in four seasons, and some stay for more than one year. We typically work two 8-hour sifts each week plus occasional help at tailgate markets. Crew days are Monday and Thursday. We encourage participation in programs offered by the Western North Carolina Collaborative Regional Alliance of Farmer Training (WNC CRAFT) and other Organic Growers’ School events.

Compensation offered…

We provide a three part compensation package – hourly wage, produce and education including access to CRAFT events and resources. Education brings most of our workers to us. We look for workers that are eager to learn. We have graduated dozens of farmers over the last 30 years. Others previous employees have gone on to a variety of land-based careers such as homesteading, agricultural advising, and nonprofit management.

Our location…

Our crew often carpools from various parts of Asheville but in general everyone needs access to their own transportation. We are twenty minutes from downtown Asheville in a surprisingly rural setting given our closeness to town. The Appalachian Trail is about 30 minutes in the opposite direction.

About working at Thatchmore…

“It’s fun. We learn lots. Tom is a great teacher. He wants to do well as an organic farmer, but his other goal is to give people the tools to become their own farmer. He wants to promote local farms. He is the only Certified Organic farmer in our area. He’s also been farming for so long and is retired from his desk job so, which leaves him more time to teach his interns. Tom is always trying something new – hazelnuts, kiwis, rice, some sort of salve, or making teabags to sell. Plus he’s always brewing some new wine or beer.”

- Susan, employee since 2015

"Tom is an excellent mentor: patient, enthusiastic, thoughtful and really committed to "growing" the next generation of farmers. If you have had no experience with farming and you're interested in a small scale, tractor free farm, this is a great option!"
