• In the mid-eighties Tom caught farm fever while we were living in a Colorado town with an eleven day growing season. We interviewed towns across the country and decided on western NC. In 1987 we opened Thatchmore Farm and grew our first crops in Leicester. Liz was born in 1990.

Tom and Karen worked off the farm in most years as well as working on the farm for roughly one full time equivalent. Liz returned to the farm in 2018 and is excited to be working as a full time farmer. Paka the cat is our Chief of Security.

Thatchmore Farm is certified organic. Organic farms, in general, feed the soil instead of the plants and use pesticides and fertilizers from plant, animal, and mineral sources in contrast to petrochemical sources. We are certified annually by a third party certification agency licensed by USDA to do organic inspections under the federal National Organic Program. Certification cost about $750 and a week of our time, annually.

It’s fun. We learn lots. Tom is a great teacher. He wants to do well as an organic farmer, but his other goal is to give people the tools to become their own farmer. He wants to promote local farms. He is the only Certified Organic farmer in our area. He’s also been farming for so long and is retired from his desk job so, which leaves him more time to teach his interns. Tom is always trying something new – hazelnuts, kiwis, rice, some sort of salve, or making teabags to sell. Plus he’s always brewing some new wine or beer.
