Heartwood is a 4.75 acre permaculture farm that specializes in producing small scale, craft meats, especially rabbit. I sell our products through our local High Country Food Hub, to individual consumers and to area restaurants. I practice regenerative agriculture, rotational grazing, and permaculture. I am adding a farmstay this spring, and prepping the ground for a small orchard/vineyard and terracing pasture lanes (since the farm is on a steep slope). I've been on the land for five years. I bought the land as an act of environmental resistance just after the 2016 election.

Our work schedule…

Typically, we will husband the rabbits, as they are year-round and our farm's mainstay. In pre-season, we will work on building projects and soil development. There are several acres of farm still in woodland, so there's a lot of select cutting, clearing, limeing and seeding to be done before spring. Once season hits (May 1), there's planting, harvesting, washing and market sales. Seasonally there are also weekly marketing projects.

Compensation offered...

$500 educational stipend + some food.

What we’re looking for...

A passion for environmental and food justice; a deep reverence for the Earth and a willingness to work hard and soak up all the learning opportunities afforded. Ability to swing a hammer and a green thumb would be nice, but not required. All-wheel or 4WD transportation and a flexible schedule (farming is weather-dependent) is required.

Our location...

Boone is a progressive college town with a vibrant, active outdoor community full of sustainable farmers and environmental justice advocates. Boone is a four-seasons resort community, so there's always something going on at the farm or in the community. There's skiing, camping, hiking, bouldering, rock climbing, canoe and kayaking, fishing, and any number of music festivals, outdoor sports, and mountain vistas to enjoy in and 30 minutes from Boone.

About working for Heartwood Farms...

“I had a great experience working for Heartwood Farms. They were flexible with scheduling, taught me a lot in the field, and were enjoyable to work alongside. I would highly recommend interning or working for Heartwood Farms.”

- Chaz Bailey, Former apprentice

“I can’t speak highly enough about my experience at Heartwood! I come from a technology background and had very little prior experience with farming at all, but I learned a lot about sustainable farming techniques during my internship. Heartwood is the perfect place to learn about pest management, soil conditioning, infrastructure logistics, and so much more, all while keeping sustainability in mind. I was so inspired by my time on the farm that I based my capstone project on precision farming, a concept that I never would have encountered without my internship!”

- Taylor McKinney, Former employee

“My experience was great. I had the opportunity to try different things, and every week there was a new project or task that was different from the last, so work never got boring. Sarah really takes good care of her employees and builds relationships with them. Excellent experience working with her.”

- Demazio Samuel, Former employee

Our farm is not open to the public.

About purchasing from Heartwood Farms...

“Heartwood Farms maintains a high quality environment for all of their rabbits, chickens, ducks, and pigs. I’ve visited the farm and seen first hand how well the animals are fed and taken care of within the regenerative farming model used by this small, earth loving farm. Their meat and eggs are always delicious and I’ll be a life long customer!”
