Roots & Fruits created our garden as large educational part to our community. In a quarter acre of land, not only do we produce enough food to sell in our market and cook in the kitchen and to demonstrate where food actually comes from.

We use organic practices and many permaculture based concepts. We raise chickens for eggs, grow annuals, perennials, fruit trees, and grow all year long through large and small hoop house cold frames.

You can find our products at our on-site Roots & Fruits Market.

Our work schedule…

We hire apprentices for the summer, fall, and winter and we’re also accepting volunteer applications beginning March 1, 2017. Apprentices will determine the length of their term. Priority is placed on those available for a longer term, but all applications will be considered. Apprentices assist in all aspects of production for our 1/4 acre of vegetables. This includes administrative tasks like seed and supply ordering, crop planning, crop rotations, business planning, marketing and record keeping. Apprentices also learn field management skills such as greenhouse management, cover cropping, irrigation, season extension techniques, pest and disease control, chicken & duck care, weed management and composting. All apprentices receive training in safe operation of farm tools and equipment and carpentry.

Compensation offered...

Our Farmer Training program fosters the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs who will create viable farm businesses in Appalachia.

Our farm is a member of the CRAFT network.

Our location...

Located in downtown Black Mountain, NC - a quaint village with 40 or so shops and a dozen restaurants.

The Black Mountain Center for the Arts is a community arts facility in the beautifully renovated Old City Hall and houses monthly exhibits in the gallery along with programs in music, visual and performing arts.

Just a few blocks from downtown is a quaint city park, Lake Tomahawk, with a half-mile loop trail around the lake with views of Graybeard Mountain and the Seven Sisters peaks.

Many folks come to know Black Mountain through the numerous conference centers located within a few miles of the town, including Ridgecrest, Blue Ridge Assembly, The Cove, and Christmount. The small township of Montreat abuts the city limits of Black Mountain and is a unique and charming village in itself, with a small liberal arts college and the Montreat Conference Center.

Applicants must have demonstrated farming experience, such as prior experience in their country of origin, on-farm employment, internships, participation in OGS programs, or similar training experiences.
