What is the Conference and where will it be held?
The Organic Growers School Spring Conference is a one-of-a-kind event that brings people of all walks of life together for a weekend of learning and networking near Asheville, North Carolina. Since 1994, the OGS Spring Conference has been the best way to kick-off the season, with over 100 classes and hands on workshops on a variety of topics, from starting your first vegetable garden, baking bread, and saving on home energy costs, to raising your own goat herd. The mission of OGS is to provide down-to-earth, practical advice on growing and sustainable living, while remaining affordable and accessible to anyone wanting to participate.
The Conference will be hosted in Asheville, North Carolina at the University of North Carolina.
Where can I view a full schedule?
The class schedule is confusing. Can you please explain?
Before you get frustrated, please read the whole document, as class descriptions and class times occur on different pages. There simply isn’t room to list them all in the same place.
TRACKS are categories or suites of classes of the same type. (example: the All About Poultry track will feature classes about poultry.)
SESSIONS are classes within tracks. (example: backyard chickens would be a session within the All About Poultry track). Sessions, or classes, are given number codes 1-4 for each day.
TIMES: There are four time slots throughout each conference day.
- Session 1: 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM
- Session 2: 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
- Session 3: 2:30 PM – 4:00 PM
- Session 4: 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Therefore, you can pick up to four classes to attend in one day. You do not have to attend all your classes in a single track. You are free to switch around from track to track throughout the day.
Many classes are REPEATED on day two of the event, to give you a better chance of getting to all the awesome classes you want to see.
Optional Half Day Workshops have two time slots per day, with a 30 minute break in the middle of each class.
- AM Classes are from 9:00 AM-12:30 PM
- PM Classes are from 2:30 PM-6:00 PM
What do classes cost?
Adult General Registration is $59 for Saturday, $49 for Sunday, or $99 for the weekend for registrations made on or before January 31, 2017. Starting February 1, registration is $74 for Saturday, $64 for Sunday, or $129 for the weekend.
General Registration gets you access to all regular, 1.5 hr classes. Seating for these classes is first come, first served. If a class is full, go to your 2nd choice. There is no additional sign up for these classes, and they do not include entry or materials fees.
Classes in all Half-Day Workshops require additional sign up and entry fees. Half-Day Workshops have a flat $10 per workshop. These fees will be collected at time of registration.
Our Pre-Conference all day workshops have different price points. Please see Here for more information. Participants may register for the Pre-Conference workshops without registering for the weekend program.
What about lunch?
Skip the lunch lines! We are excited to offer pre-ordered box lunches that you can select with your registration. There are four menu choices, two from Rosetta’s Kitchen and two from Sweet Monkey Cafe & Bakery. Lunch will be freshly made and ready for pick-up at their booth. You will receive a coupon for your exact order. A drink is included in the price. These lunches are pre-packaged, so no exchanges, please. Rosetta’s and Sweet Monkey will be open for breakfast on both days of the conference.
What is a half day hands-on workshop and when does it happen?
Half day hands on workshops cover topics that warrant a more in-depth look. These classes are three hours as opposed to the usual 1.5 hour sessions, and occur at the same time as usual classes. They cost $10 extra because they are hands on in nature, and usually you learn by doing, and get to take your work home. These workshops are some of the most popular offerings at the event, so make sure to register early to get a spot!
Can I register for just a class or two, and not the whole day?
Because we try to keep things both affordable and simple, we regret that we cannot offer partial registrations.
You may register for our Pre-Conference Full Day Workshops without purchasing a weekend ticket.
The Kid's Program is open to what ages?
OGS is excited to team up with Forest Floor Wilderness Programs this year to mentor children during the 2017 Spring Conference through games, stories, and earth skills. This program will coincide with the adult class schedule each day on campus. Come prepared for a fun-filled journey discovering the wonders of nature! Visit ontheforestfloor.org.
Two Groups of Children: Ages 5-7 & Ages 8-12
Cost: $40 per day, per child (a parent must be registered for the conference on the same day)
Limited registration: 40 children total
I have a hard time registering online. Can I register by phone?
It is possible to register by mail and through our online registrations system. If you experience difficulty or must register by phone, you may contact our office at 828-214-7833 for details on registering.
Can I register at the event?
Yes, but it’s more expensive, and you may miss out on limited seating in cooking classes or half-day hands on workshops. Registrations postmarked or submitted after January 31st will cost an additional $15 per day. Save money by planning ahead! Register by January 31st!
Something’s come up. Can I get a refund?
Registration for the 2016 OGS Spring Conference is non-refundable. The event will be held rain, snow, or shine. Click here for the full refund policy.
